mammography
- have proved to be better than mammograms at picking up early
breast cancer.
..... But let me stress that mammograms
are only effective if used properly, so any woman over the age
of 40 should discuss with her doctor (or with the screening
mammography clinic in her area) when and how often to get mammograms.
..... And finally, a study about
breast cancer that I believe deserves special attention was
one in which researchers assessed all Danish women born between
the years 1935 and 1978 and concluded that the more babies a
woman bears before she turns thirty, the lower her eventual
risk of breast cancer. So here's something vital for all young
women to note: the earlier you have babies, the better it is
for your breasts.
..... And despite what anyone
says, I swear I did not highlight this news just because I'm
dying to be a granddad, and I'd like my son and his girlfriend
to read this.
..... Well, maybe that did colour
my thinking a wee bit, but just a wee bit, I assure you.

Herbal Health...Continued From Page

..... Zinc lozenges are also a popular treatment for
colds and flus. When taken every two hours, they can reduce
the severity and duration of cold symptoms. These lozenges shouldn't
be taken continuously for more than one week. Be warned that
these lozenges might not taste very good. It is hard to mask
the taste of zinc.
..... This wouldn't be a complete
article about cold cures if I didn't include vitamin C. A favorite
of Dr. Linus Pauling, vitamin C can help fight off colds and
flus. It usually works best when taken continuously, not just
when you have a cold. There has been some recent news that too
much vitamin C might not be good for you. There is little evidence
to suggest that doses less than 1000mg daily have any ill effects.
Higher doses might cause an upset stomach or diarrhea.
..... Whenever you feel that sore
throat may be coming, relax and take care of yourself. Don't
forget to drink lots of water, the most underappreciated cold
remedy. The extra water will help to loosen phlegm and allow
you to clear it easier. I also feel that rest should always
be encouraged. Cold symptoms are an indication that our body
is under attack and we should allow our bodies time to heal.
I feel that many of the complications due to the flu could be
avoided if people only slowed down and rested. Cold and flu
symptoms can be the best reason- I hate to use the word excuse-
to take a day out from our fast paced culture.
