| Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromuscular disease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses from the brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When these muscles fail to receive messages, they lose strength, atrophy and die. ALS can hit anyone at anytime regardless of age, gender, or ethnic origin and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is 3 to 5 years. ALS now claims more lives in Canada than AIDS.

Helping Provide
More Help
..... More Hope
....June was ALS Month and all Peoples Drug Marts and Peoples Pharmacies participated by launching the first ever ALS Stars of Hope campaign. For the entire month of June, bright yellow stars of hope were sold for $2.00 each and they were later displayed throughout the stores. The stars of hope fundraiser was hugely successful due to the generosity of our customers and the enthusiasm of the Peoples staff.
....The Peoples store that raised the most funds was Port McNeill Peoples Drug Mart. The staff held a hot dog sale and sold the most stars during June. In total, Port McNeill Peoples Drug Mart raised $2700.00 by selling over 507 stars, 167 ALS books and holding a hot dog sale.
....With the success of the stars of hope campaign and other fundraisers such as the ALS vitamin sale, the Peoples group was extremely pleased to be able to present a $20,000.00 cheque to the ALS Society of BC.
....Peoples Drug Mart is a provincial partner with the The ALS Society of BC and is grateful for the opportunity to help raise funds and awareness for the society.
