Kitchen

..... Building a strong and vibrant body is much the same as building a house. If you haven’t built on a strong foundation, you are wasting time and money. Your house may look nice but it will not stand up to the test of time. Sooner or later gravity will begin to work its magic and the structure will settle and begin to sag. Paint will fade, cracks will appear and generally speaking it will take more money and energy to maintain than one that was built strong to begin with. The same thing goes for our health. Shortcuts and inferior products can only take us so far, sooner or later it will all catch up with us.
..... Optimal health begins at a cellular level. Much of our focus is on the external rather
heavily on chemicals to get the crop to the market and these chemicals do not enhance our health. Try to shop organic whenever possible especially when it comes to apricots, apples, celery, spinach, strawberries, peaches, cherries, green beans, bell peppers and imported cantaloupe. These are often quite high in pesticides. Find organic sources for your meat and poultry. Much of the meat industry is reliant on hormones, antibiotics and inferior feed. Not to mention the conditions many of these animals are kept in. Fish and seafood are best from areas with less pollution.
..... Healthy eating need not be complicated. In fact for many foods, the less we mess with it before we eat it,
than the internal world. The inner body is often regarded as out of sight out of mind until something goes wrong. But this amazing internal world should really be celebrated. The human body is an incredible healer when given half a chance and it is never too late to start.
One of the first steps in the pursuit of living a healthy lifestyle is to bring about changes right in the heart of the matter. We can start right in our very own kitchens. Take a look in your fridge and cupboards. What do you see? If it is a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and quality proteins you are on the right track. If it is mostly organic you are probably there already. But chances are you are shopping the middle isles of the grocery store and you may well be reading the labels, but the mere fact that it even has a label is part of the whole problem! What we have forgotten is that once a food has been processed and put in a box or a bag, it has become less than nature intended it to be. And remember, just because it says organic on the bag of potato chips, does not mean it is a high quality food. The humble potato is a nutritious food until we subject it to the deep fryer and dump a bunch of salt on it.
..... So we need a new shopping strategy. The bottom line is less is more. The less the food has been tampered with, the more nutritious it will be. Weed out the convenience and junk foods. Modern agricultural practices also depend
... the more nutritious it will be. Many people are finding ways to incorporate more raw foods into the diet. Raw foods are full of vital, enzyme rich nutrients. You can begin by sprouting seeds, legumes and nuts to incorporate into your salads and packing fresh fruit and veggies in your lunch instead of cookies and granola bars. Raw foods help to build energy instead of deplete it.
..... If you have a blender at home you can make superior dressings in minutes. Start with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice or cider vinegar and you have a base for a delicious vinaigrette. If you are watching fat intake an organic low fat yogurt makes a great base on which to build a dressing. You can also use your blender to make your own spreads, nut butters and dips. A juicer is another healthy kitchen must have. Fresh vegetable and fruits juices are far superior to their pasteurized cousins at the supermarket and can be economical if you have your own garden or fruit trees.
..... A healthy kitchen evolves as your nutritional awareness grows. Foods you once had a preference for no longer hold appeal once you begin to shift away from processed to wholesome. Be mindful next time you go shopping and really pay attention to what you are buying. Chances are you can live better without most of it!!

Good Health to You!
