Folic acid blunts severity of birth defects
.....Folic acid in the diet not only helps prevent birth defects but also improves the survival chances of children born with them reports a study published in Pediatrics.
..... A look at more than 2,800 infants born with spina bifida between 1998 and 2001 found that 92 percent of them survived the first year of life. That compared to 90 percent prior to 1998, when folic acid was added to grains for fortification.
..... Folic acid is a B vitamin found in leafy green vegetables, fruits and other foods and is widely used as a dietary supplement during pregnancy to prevent spinal and neural birth defects.
Alternating drugs may be best for lowering fever in kids
.....Alternating between acetaminophen (in painkillers such as Tylenol) and ibuprofen (for example, Advil) is better than sticking with either medication alone at bringing down a fever in a young child, a recent study shows.
.....The study involved 464 children, between 6 and 36 months of age, received acetaminophen, ibuprofen or alternating doses of each drug (every 4 hours) for 3 days.
.....Treatment with the alternating regimen provided many benefits over the two types of single therapy reports the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
.....The alternating regimen was associated with more rapid reduction of temperature, a lower average temperature, a drop in fever-reducing medication use, less stress, and less absenteeism from day care compared with the other treatments. |

Coezyme Q10
..... Coenzyme Q10 is also called CoQ10, and sometimes Ubiquinone because it is ubiquitously found in whole natural foods. the average person ingests between 5 and 10 mg of CoQ10 a day thgrough foods. CoQ10 is a natural vitamin-like compound that is indispensable to the process of energy production at the cellular level. Depletion of Co Q10 can develop in the aging process, and is associated with failing heart function and failing liver adequacy.
..... CoQ10 and Statin Drugs. If you are taking prescription statin drugs such as simvastatin (Zocor®) or lovostatin (Mevacor®) for elevated cholesterol levels, you should take supplementary CoQ10. Statin drugs block some processes that are the same processes that are needed to manufacture CoQ10.
..... The recommended daily intake is 30 to 100 milligrams, depending on your age and health status. Many health professionals recommend a minimum of 100 mg daily for people taking statin drugs. CoQ10 has an adverse drug interaction with coumadin (Warfarin®) possibly reducing its effectiveness leading to unwanted blood clotting. If you are currently on both coumadin and CoQ10, do not suddenly stop either treatment but alert your physician for consultation.
