get more than our fair share of rain throughout the year. We do however get a short “not so rainy” season that we fondly refer to as summer. When the clouds do part and permit the sun to grace us I head outside. I love gardening, hiking, rock climbing or paddling in my kayak and I much prefer these activities on sunny days! There is a certain quality to a sun filled day that cannot be captured in the rain.
..... For many, sunscreen is the first tool in their sun survival kit. I don’t know how I would survive without mine. Anything less that a 30 is pointless for me! However, studies are finding that while the sunscreens can decrease the incidence of sunburn, we are not necessarily protecting ourselves from skin cancer. We may still be exposing ourselves to harmful amounts of damaging radiation.
..... Another line of defence is to wear UV Protective clothing. It is becoming more popular and offers a non-sticky alternative to sunscreens. A wide brimmed hat is also an essential addition to the summer wardrobe. Finding shade between the hours of 10:00 am to 2:00 pm is an excellent sun smart strategy. This is when the UV rays are at their peak strength. To avoid these hours of exposure reduces your risk factors.
..... Other than becoming a total sun hermit, perhaps the best defence is to build strong armour from the inside out. Always high on my list of preventative health recommendations is to clean up the diet and weed out the poor quality foods. |

the upside is that about 90% of skin cancers are curable with early detection. Regular check ups are advisable especially if you notice any of the following:
1. Any open sore that that will not heal over properly.
2. A reddish irritated spot that may itch, hurt or cause no
....discomfort at all. These usually appear on the chest,
....shoulder, arm or leg.
3. Any smooth growth with an elevated border and an
....indented center.
4. A shiny scar-like area that may be white, yellow or
....waxy
with a shiny, taut appearance.
5. An enlarging, irregular lesion on the face, lips or ears.
6. Any mole that changes in shape, appearance or texture.
..... Moderation is pretty much the key in all that we do. Unfortunately being human also means we often think that if something is good – more is better! This can create an imbalance within our systems that may contribute to disease. We have to remember that the sun is also good for us in small amounts. This same powerful source that can damage our DNA and increase our risk for skin cancer is also responsible for providing our bodies with essential Vitamin D. Many health professionals agree that 15 to 20 minutes of daily sunshine can do wonders for overall health. So use your common sun sense this summer and get out there and have fun!
Good Health to You!
