treat bronchitis. The most promising is something called N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). This supplement is normally used to help treat acetaminophen and carbon monoxide poisonings. There is also some evidence which suggests that it can be useful in helping to treat bronchitis. Doses range from 400mg to 1200mg per day. Side effects include stomach upset, constipation and rashes. It can take about 2-3 months of continual use to see an improvement of the symptoms of chronic bronchitis.
.....Supplements that can help strengthen the immune system may also help to reduce the complications of bronchitis.
These include, my favourites; a good multivitamin, zinc lozenges and extra vitamin C. There are lots of supplements available that claim to help improve your immune system; many of them do work. However, I still feel that the best “bang for your buck” is a good multivitamin, extra vitamin C and lots of sleep.
.....A more traditional remedy is to inhale soothing aromatic oils like menthol and eucalyptus. These oils can be very helpful in clearing phlegm and bringing down lung inflammation. One must be careful with these remedies, because they can sometimes worsen the condition. This is especially true for
young children. It is not recommended to use preparations that contain a high amount of menthol or eucalyptus in children under two. It can sometimes cause bronchoconstriction.
.....While the prospect of not being able to breathe can be scary, sometimes understanding what is happening, and what you can do to help, can be reassuring. The first time you have any breathing problems you should bring it to the attention of a Doctor quickly. Sometimes a little knowledge can help you breathe a sigh of relief.
