..... One could liken the immune system to an immigration office. When functioning properly, this immune defense will detect alien intruders and show them the unwelcome mat. It is a highly complex system that involves armies of blood cells, enzymes, and proteins that patrol and protect the body from viruses, bacteria and other foreign substances. Illness and disease can only get a toe hold, if this line of defence is compromised.
..... That is the reason we strive for balance in all areas of our lives. To maintain an efficient immune response the body needs
find plant sterols very effective. Plant sterols are also showing to be an effective cholesterol fighter.
..... Astragalus root is an herb that is a beneficial tonic for the immune system. It is particularly effective when it comes to chronic lung issues. Studies have found that Astragalus extract can stimulate T cells in patients with lowered immunity and increase production of interferon which helps fight viruses at a cellular level.
Echinacea and Golden Seal are a great team to have on hand during cold and flu tseason. Neither of these herbs should be
a wide variety of nutritious food to supply essential vitamins and minerals, adequate rest to rebuild and repair tissue and moderate exercise to oxygenate the blood and to get the lymph system circulating.

A healthy immune system may not necessarily mean you won’t fall prey to the next flu bug but if it is alert and up to speed, your recovery will be faster and secondary complications less likely. There are times however, in our fast paced world, where the stresses of everyday living are hard to avoid and the immune system needs a little TLC. This is when I call on some of my favourite supplements for immune support.
..... My medicine cabinet is never without Olive Leaf extract. If I am exposed to someone with a cold or when I start to feel the first few symptoms coming on, I reach for Olive Leaf. It has anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti viral properties and in my experience, there are few supplements that can out perform this one. I find that not only is Olive Leaf an excellent preventative measure but it is also effective once you are in the grips of an illness. Many suffering from Fibromyalgia, Epstein-Barr Virus and Candida have found a relief from symptoms and more energy when they include olive leaf into their regime.

..... There are many who hail the preventive powers held in a clove of raw garlic. It is a natural antibiotic and helps to protect the body from infection. Unfortunately one can not keep garlic a secret and this can be a problem for those in close contact with non garlic eaters! Odourless garlic is available in capsule form and can be a great alternative to the real thing.
..... Shitake mushrooms are available fresh, dried and in capsule form. This mushroom is not only delicious in a stir fry but helps to activate a sluggish immune system. It is believed to be of particular benefit in fighting tumours.
..... Grapefruit Seed Extract contains high levels of vitamin C, bioflavinoids and vitamin E. These powerful antioxidants have proven to be effective in helping neutralize free radicals that cause damage at a cellular level. Grapefruit seed extract is a multi purpose supplement that naturally detoxifies the body, as well as enhances and supports the immune system. This is one of my favourite supplements to tuck into my bag whenever I am travelling or hiking. I have found it to be effective in a wide variety of circumstances.
