.....Everyone gets an upset stomach or a stomach flu at one point. It can be miserable; diarrhea, fever, gas, heartburn and stomach pain. For most of us this pain and discomfort will go away. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crones disease or any chronic bowel disease never get relief from these symptoms. It is with them in the morning and it is with them when they go to bed; many times it is just a matter of severity. In this article, I will review the major natural treatment options for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
.....The first thing I tell people who have IBS is that their treatments and worsening factors will be individual. Most people will have learned this already; many can’t eat eggs, raw veggies, or meats/fatty foods. This is why people should experiment with, and document the results of, food avoidance. It is thought that IBS might be aggravated by food allergies or intolerances. The major culprits are eggs, wheat, dairy, corn and preservatives. This includes processed foods, because they contain many ingredients that people may not associate with ‘trigger’ foods; such as, wheat or dairy proteins. When people start avoiding certain food groups, I recommend that they take a multivitamin that is not in tablet or delayed release form. People with IBS may not have a

long enough intestinal transit time, or be taking medications that interfere with the ability of tablets to dissolve and be absorbed. Liquid, chewable, capsules or effervescent formulations will help with vitamin absorption. The nutritional

deficiencies associated with intestinal disorders are too numerous to mention so supplementation is important. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist which supplements would be best for you.
.....One interesting fact I found was the possible link between the food additive carrageenan (extracted from seaweed) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In animal studies, carrageenan has been shown to cause IBS like symptoms. While carrageenan did not cause symp

toms in normal human subjects, it is thought that the abnormal intestinal flora found in people with Crones disease can metabolize it into harmful products. While this theory may not be conclusive, it may prove helpful to those who suffer from IBS. I also recommend acidophilus supplements to people with intestinal problems. I feel that the connection between helpful intestinal microflora and normal digestion is often overlooked.
.....Two of my favorite recommendations for any intestinal problems are peppermint and chamomile. While peppermint tea can be effective, enteric-coated oil formulations tend to be the most helpful. The enteric coating avoids upper gastrointestinal tract absorption and the possible side effects of heartburn and reflux. One study, with 110 patients, found that those who took an enteric coated peppermint oil (ECPO) capsule, three to four times a day, reported a significant reduction in IBS symptoms compared to those who received a placebo. 79% of the patients who received ECPO experienced an improvement of the severity of abdominal pain (29 were pain-free) compared to 43% of the placebo patients (4 were pain-free). Although not reported in this study, some people experienced burning during defecation. This is caused by unabsorbed menthol; a reduction in the dosage will help to
