. .. Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) is a sulfur containing compound that is found in many foods, such as tea, meat products, chocolate, fruit and seafood. . .. Another emerging supplement is bromelain. This digestive enzyme is obtained from the stem and fruit of pineapples. In some small studies it has been shown to be helpful in reducing osteoarthritis and knee pain. The doses used were 200 mg to 400 mg daily for 30 days. I recommend taking it on an empty stomach, if you can tolerate it. The most common side effects include stomach upset and possible allergic reactions. Bromelain also might cause additive anticoagulant (blood thinning) effects and increase the risk of bleeding when people are taking blood thinning medications. This reaction is theoretical but people should still exercise caution.

about the turmeric extract called curcumin, and its ability to help treat arthritis. There is also some evidence that it might be helpful in treating cancer and preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric is the bright yellow spice that is used in Indian cooking. It is true that curcumin is a COX-2 inhibitor, like the new anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celebrex. Turmeric extract can also thin the blood, so people who are taking anti-coagulants should talk to their Peoples Pharmacist before taking this supplement.
