suddenly going to change his actions just because you tell him that you’re getting bad zits. In fact, if he really wants to get under your skin (pardon the easy pun), he may not even give you time off to see the dermatologist. Thus, you have to do something to improve your situation.
Your choices include:
1) learning to adapt and not letting him get to you
(way, way easier said than done, of course)
2) getting out of the situation (“I quit, ha, ha, ha”),
but obviously a choice that can carry some very
severe potential consequences (your new boss may be
even worse),
3) confronting your boss to try to get him to change
his behavior (if you choose this approach, you better
have a great plan B)
4) dealing with the consequences of the stress on your
health. This choice involves both treating the stress-
related symptoms with medication (a limited solution
that should not be entertained lightly) and way more
important, adopting techniques and strategies that
reduce your stress, and there are as many stress-
reducing strategies out there as there are authors who
profit from writing books about how to lower stress
levels (some authors have even had the chutzpah to
write several nearly identical books, each with a dif
ferent title, of course, that all promise help with
stress; did someone just say, “Deepak Chopra?” Not me.)
.....Trouble is, we are all different, with differing needs and varying responses to stress and more important, to stress-reducing tactics, so what you must do is pick the approach that makes most sense to you, not the one being pedaled on Oprah. So whereas, for example, exercise works wonders for me, it might only make you feel more stressed because you don’t have the time, you feel too fat, you hate sweating, etc. Similarly, meditation and religion and acupuncture and Falun gong and literally hundreds of other modalities all have their proponents but at the same time, they also have millions of people who say, “Tried it, didn’t work for me.”
.....Bottom line: you know yourself best. Be honest about the effects of stress in your life; if you need to, do something about it; but always pick something that has at least a chance of working for you.
.....By the way, if you want to help me reduce my stress levels, buy a copy of one of my books. If you really want to help, buy several copies.
