states that it blocks 100% of both UV-A and UV-B light. It is very hard to find sunglasses in Canada that do not block both kinds of UV light. For maximum protection look for the kind that 'wrap around', this will prevent light from getting in from the sides. Basically, if you are outside and squinting, you should be wearing sunglasses. You don't need to get an expensive pair of sunglasses for them to be effective. More expensive pairs might be a little more fashionable or use better quality glass or plastic for the lenses. I am still using the same $30 pair of sunglasses that I bought at Mountain Equipment Co-op 7 years ago.
.... I always recommend that people |
wear a hat while outside in the sun. A wide brimmed hat can help keep the sun off the sensitive skin of the scalp, ears, nose and face. It also helps to reduce the amount of sunlight that gets in via the top of your sunglasses. If you ask any Doctor or Dermatologist, they could tell you that most skin cancers are found on the neck and face. Baseball style hats are not enough, they do not provide protection for the ears, cheeks or neck. So if you will be spending prolonged time in the sun, wear a wide brimmed style hat.
.... What about the little ones? What should you do to help protect them from the sun? Children, until the age of 12 months, should be kept out |
of direct sunlight. Their skin at this age is still quite sensitive. They also run a greater risk of becoming dehydrated much easier than older kids. If need be, children over the age of 6 months can wear sunscreen.
.... By no means am I advocating that people should hide from the sun like vampires. There are so many health benefits associated with getting outdoors. Just be aware about the possible dangers of getting too much sun. .
