.....The cold season is quickly approaching. Perhaps this year, you will avoid those nasty "bugs" that cause fevers, coughs and runny noses. But if not, what will you need? Cough syrups? Herbal products? Decongestants? Expectorants? Sometimes what you need most is a bit of knowledge. This month, I will provide you with some information about colds, flus, the differences between them, and some natural treatment options.
.....Why do we always seem to get more colds in the winter months? No one is really sure why, but there are a couple of theories. The first is that because of the cold weather, we are spending a lot more time indoors. This close and extended contact with other people might be one reason why we catch more colds. This is similar to the reason why we often catch colds when traveling in airplanes. Another possibility is that we are heating our homes, which tends to cause dry skin and dry nostrils. A moist nasal passage is the bodies first line of defense against colds and flus.
.....What is the difference between a cold and a flu? Viruses cause both conditions. The common cold can occur year round and the symptoms are relatively mild. The flu, or influenza, usually occurs in the winter and its symptoms develop

rapidly and are quite severe. The symptoms for both ailments are similar: runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache and general body aches. Influenza has the added torment of providing more symptoms, which include: chills, fever, fatigue and muscle pain. What is my criteria for determining if you have a cold or flu?
If you walk into the pharmacy for medicine, you have a cold. If you are still in bed and send someone else into the pharmacy, you have the flu. This is not very scientific, but it is usually correct.
.....There are many homeopathic products available to treat the various symptoms of colds and flus, but one product that stands out is Oscillococcinum. Several studies have shown its

effectiveness in reducing the duration and severity of influenza-like symptoms. Other homeopathic options include aconite (for treating the symptoms of high fever, barking cough and severe thirst), belladonna (high fever with headache) or allium (running nose, watery eyes and lots of sneezing). The advantages of homeopathic medication are that they don't interact with medications or conflict with medical conditions. Many Peoples Pharmacies carry a selection of homeopathic products, which are helpful in treating colds, flus, and other minor conditions. These medications work gently and may not be for everyone. Ask your Peoples Pharmacist for more information about homeopathics.
.....The most popular remedy, and my personal favourite, is Echinacea. Echinacea helps to stimulate the immune system to fight off colds and flus. The recommended daily dosage is 2 to 5 mL of an alcoholic tincture (1:5; 45% ethanol), or the equivalent of 1 g of the dried herb, three times a day. It is generally best to start taking Echinacea at the first sign of a cold or flu. If you already have a cold, Echinacea can still help to lessen the duration of your influenza misery. There have been few side effects reported while tak
