most important thing to do is rapidly increase their blood glucose by giving them simple carbohydrates. The simpler the better. In most people, 15 grams of simple sugars can raise their blood glucose by 2 mmol/L in about 20 minutes.
.....Examples of 15 grams of carbohydrates:
• 3 teaspoons or 3 packets of table sugar dissolved in water
• 6 Life Savers candies (about 2.5grams each)
• 1 tablespoon honey
• 175ml (1/2 cup) of juice or a regular soft drink.
.....The symptoms of hypoglycemia should be resolved after about 20-30 minutes. At this time, a complex carbohydrate snack with some protein should be consumed. If the person is showing more severe symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as confusion, loss |
of consciousness or seizures, seek medical attention. People who have diabetes should have a plan and know how to treat hypoglycemic episodes. If not, they should contact their Doctor, Diabetes Educator or Pharmacist for treatment plans. It is a good idea to educate the people around you about the symptoms of hypoglycemia ahead of time, so that they can recognize them and help you.
.....There are other potential causes of hypoglycemia: prolonged, vigorous exercise, skipping meals and excessive alcohol consumption. All of these can deplete the body of glycogen. In the case of excessive alcohol consumption, lower blood sugar is thought to be one of the causes of a 'hangover'. The others being dehydration and a buildup of the toxic byproducts associated with ethanol metabolism. To prevent these other causes of hypoglycemia, eat |
regularly, have a carbohydrate snack after exercise and drink in moderation. If you must imbibe, drink plenty of water and have a snack.
.....Most people do not get past the glucagon release stage of hypoglycemia. Glucagon causes the usual symptoms associated with hunger: stomach gurgling, discomfort and headache. But the best way to avoid this problem is to eat regular, healthy meals. If you have diabetes, the importance of maintaining a proper diet should not be ignored. A well balanced diet will not only keep blood glucose levels normal, but it will also make you feel better. A healthy diet can also prevent heart disease, lower your blood pressure and keep your immune system working great. So eat well, exercise regularly and enjoy your summer.
